Sana Sana Beach Towel

Give your bathroom a vibrant look and wrap yourself up with this super soft and cozy all-over sublimation towel. The idea for this piece came to me while I was out for a run in Viveros de Coyoacán, one of my favorite places in all of Mexico City. Every morning, I’d lace up my shoes and run through the park while training for my marathon. During those runs, I spent a lot of time reflecting on what it meant to be Latina while also feeling strangely disconnected from the people around me. My Spanish was broken at best. I’m Puerto Rican and Dominican, so I don’t look like many of the locals, and of course, I’m American. Even though Mexico had felt familiar to me in so many ways, I was constantly aware that I was both connected to it and very separate from it. On one of my runs, I noticed a man a few strides ahead of me wearing a sweatshirt with a bright green frog on the back. The little frog was staring right at me, and instantly I was transported back to my childhood, to every time I injured myself bad enough to draw blood and shed tears, and my mom would magically stop the tears with this age old rhyme: “Sana, sana, culito de rana. Si no sana hoy, sanará mañana.” Later that day, I mentioned it to one of my friends from Mexico City. She laughed and told me that nearly every country in Latin America knows some version of the rhyme but after doing some searching, I found that everyone argues over whether it’s culito or colita. I chose colita for the title to keep it a little more proper, but I can promise you that in my Dominican household, culito was absolutely the word of choice. This little coquí is my love letter to those shared moments that connect us across countries, accents, and cultures.
